Jersey Ian Rolls St Brelade, Jersey

For me art is interwoven with every aspect of my life and is inseparable from it.

About Ian Rolls

"Jersey has been my rock for all of my life." Ian Rolls has left it, travelled widely, fallen in love with other countries and cultures (particularly India and Sri Lanka). But Jersey has always drawn him back and nurtured him. Ian has made art, exhibited and led creative projects wherever he has lived, responding instinctively to bright colour, strong light, the well worn, and the damn right chaotic. Meditation has been a guiding factor in Ian's life. Together with his art (inextricably linked), they have got him through.

Ian's drawings are distorted, mindful and playfully chaotic. Although “naturally” right-handed, Ian Rolls draws with his left hand. It helps him connect with the right (instinctive) side of his brain. He paints with his right hand. The process is careful and controlled in watercolour but wild and physical in oil or acrylic. However, these generalisations are made for defying. In art, there are no rules, right or wrong, only what feels good at the time. Ian regularly makes things from discarded or found materials and tries and treads lightly on the planet, which is a daily source of wonder and awe to him.
